Fighting copyright monopolies is hard enough without adding Stockholm syndrome to the mix.
- komali2 9y agoPerhaps I am looking for an opportunity to express even more gratitude, considering the OP could be committing an actual crime to bring us content :) Or, I am curious why the OP is willing to take this risk for us. Really, though, I am just curious if I would get in trouble for doing the same down the line ;)
- squeaky-clean 9y agoWhat risk though? The worst I could ever see coming from this is HN deleting your comment and banning your account. Has anyone ever actually been fined for resharing an article text in a webforum comment?
- komali2 9y agoThat sounds to me like a risk! I like commenting here.
- gowld 9y agoMaintaining civil order is everyone's responsibility, not merely professionals. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peelian_principles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peelian_principles Denying a citizens obligation to be active member of the social order reduces us to passive objects in society. Why are you fighting copyright monopolies? You are doing free work for the any-copyright industry.
- kaffee 9y agoReally, copyright is about "civil order"? Interesting. This is the first time I have heard that particular justification for IPR. edit: ok, that's not true. the MPAA/RIAA advertisements do equate piracy with violent crime.
- komali2 9y agoWell, perhaps not for many consumers, but I know artists for example that regularly utilize copyright law to protect their creations.
- JumpCrisscross 9y ago> Really, copyright is about "civil order"? Good journalism boosts the quality of civic life. Journalism funded solely by advertising has a poor record. So we're left with public funding à la the BBC, or the patronage of billionaires, thereby sacrificing the Fourth Estate's independence; or subscriptions. The latter requires a solution to the free rider problem [1]. Paywalls, and the copyrights defending them, are one such solution. I consume news from subscription sources (e.g. the Wall Street Journal and the Information), advertising-back sources (e.g. Politico) and subsidized sources (e.g. the BBC and Bloomberg). I benefit from that reading, as does, I believe, the greater society I live in. I think it's fair and rational to fight for said journalists' compensation. - kolbe 9y agoYou have a very bootlicky idea of "civil order." You'd make a great citizen in an unjust totalitarian state.
- sctb 9y agoPersonal attacks like this are not OK on Hacker News. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- paulcole 9y agoI'm not OK with anyone taking the copyrighted work I use to make a living. Why would I be OK with the same happening to anyone else? It's not "Stockholm syndrome" it's being decent and respectful of other people's effort and work.
