I have heard from many people that Beats sound good. Most of the time, the comparisons come up against your average $10-20 headphones, using modern pop, alternative, and electronica. I've also simply accepted that many people just don't care that much about the quality of their headphones, largely because their preferred music doesn't require high fidelity; their music rewards heavy bass and doesn't punish muddled mids. My own preference for headphones directly reflects my choice in music: you just can't listen to classical music on crappy headphones, as entire groups of instruments can be lost to the mud and the bass.
