Fair enough.
Me vs. Professor of Economics Steven Levitt:
Levitt:
1 hand-picked prostitue that was a guest lecturer in his college class.
Me:
- PROSTITUTION IS THE MOST DANGEROUS JOB IN AMERICA. The murder rate is 1 in 490. Compare that to the fishing industry, where the death rate is 1 in 775.
- Eighty-two percent of prostitutes reported having been physically assaulted since entering prostitution.
- Women trafficked to the United States have been forced to have sex with 400-500 men to pay off $40,000 in debt for their passage.
- Statistics show that at least 2/3 of prostitutes began working in prostitution before the age of 16
Like Levitt I decided to provide points that suit my argument.

- dotcoma 16y agoI think high-level and low-level prostitution are two almost completely different businesses.
- yardie 16y agoYes, one is on-demand by phone, and the other is on-demand at the street corner. In both cases you don't know how they got there (whether by choice or force) and most johns don't care to ask.
- trustfundbaby 16y agoTotally different clientele. Ask this lady http://www.realprincessdiaries.com/ http://www.realprincessdiaries.com/
- jacquesm 16y agoIf you're at work you probably don't want to click that link.
- trustfundbaby 16y agoYeah ... sorry guys, NSFW.
- nandemo 16y agoWhat are you really trying to say? Levitt is talking about one case which is not representative, and he is definitely not claiming that it is representative. Citing statistics cannot refute the existence of a non-representative data point. On the price elasticity: if you're a freelance programmer and you raise your hourly rate from $100 to $400, you might not make more money. So if someone can successfully pull it out, it is noteworthy.
- loewenskind 16y agoYou know, there are some countries where prostitution is legal. Of course the picture will be bleak where it's illegal.
- brc 16y agoIf you read the whole book you'll find much of those statistics in there. They explore the high cost escort option as a way of looking at economic principles. I don't find the book anything but an easy read and a different take on subject matter. The authors didn't murder any prostitutes. If you want to complain, try your state government and ask for legal brothels.
- varjag 16y ago> 1 hand-picked prostitue that was a guest lecturer in his college class. Actually, two. One's higher-end, another a street hooker. > PROSTITUTION IS THE MOST DANGEROUS JOB IN AMERICA. Levitt actually says right there in the text, that street prostitution is the worst job in America. I don't quite understand what you argue about. The article is not about morality, cruelty or whatever. It's on how social pressures shape the economics of prostitution.
- MeInEurope 16y agoI am lucky to live in a country where prostituion is legal. This is beneficial for all sides. Customers can contact the police if they are tricked, and - more importantly - sex workers can call the police without fear if they are in a dangerous situation. And most important: Official brothels are a VERY safe place to work. >Statistics show that at least 2/3 of prostitutes began working in prostitution before the age of 16 Total nonsense. No legal brothel risks their (valuable!) license and reputation by allowing under age sex workers to work for them. In short: Help women and legalize it.
- stcredzero 16y agoWomen trafficked to the United States have been forced to have sex with 400-500 men to pay off $40,000 in debt for their passage. I knew a couple of individuals in college who, through their time as a student, had sex with about that many people recreationally. (In one case, it was in the biblical sense, and yes I have been tested and cleared many times since then.)
- dgabriel 16y agoThere's a pretty clear difference between wanting to sleep with someone, and being forced to sleep with someone by a trafficker.
- stcredzero 16y agoThere's a pretty clear difference between a report of numbers and a postion that the voluntary activities of a student are equivalent to someone who's been trafficked.
