There were cell phones in the 80s and touch screens before the iPhone but there were missing conditions that prevented those technologies to be a mass market success. It can be price, quality of implementation, availability, convenience... When VRML was released it was still early days for real time 3D graphics. Only the pointy end of computers had 3D hardware acceleration. Edited to fix typos.
