I use my 980 Ti via thunderbolt on my laptop, it’s about a 3-10% performance hit. The main issue is that quite a few laptops struggle to do the full 40gbps error free. Nice thing though is my laptop gets power over the USB-C cable thunderbolt 3 uses, so it’s only 1 cable to plug in.
