- lkbm 9y agoI was struck by the fact that the bottoms of the canals is just mud--no trash (at least in the photos in the article). The article mentioned the "filth buried at the bottom of the canals", but they seem remarkably clean.
- greglindahl 9y ago... the island doesn't have a sewer system.
- ivanhoe 9y agoit looks clean, but the smell of that mud, o boy...
- klez 9y agoLike greglindahl pointed out in another comment, there are no sewers in Venice, so that's not just mud. That's another reason for the smell.
- the_mitsuhiko 9y agoAny body of water in a city collects dirt over time. When the water is gone cleaning becomes possible.
- CydeWeys 9y agoDredging is a common maintenance activity on canals, and is easier to do with the water present (since you can use ships) than when it is absent. It's certainly easier to pop down with a trash bag and pick up litter when the water is absent, but for dredging the dirt, you need the water to come back. There's no good way to move it around without being able to float it off in a boat on the water.
