Just have a senior software engineer or two supervise mathematicians (or to an only so slightly lesser degree, physicists). The latter are excellent at abstraction, usually pick up programming languages in no time, and can readily get steered towards using software best practices by their senior peers provided the latter can articulate a rational explanation as to why this or that best practice is just better.
