There is an upper bound to autonomous vehicle performance with our current roadway infrastructure and that is well below the threshold of full self driving cars. Once we retrofit the roads with sensors, remove the reliance on existing physical signage, and add guardrails to prevent unanticipated occurrences as much as possible, we'll see real progress. Once everything (cars, roadway, services, etc) becomes networked and talks to each other, we can get rid of the steering wheels. My guess is we're 10 years away from limited availability and 50 years away from full build out country wide. One question - will a new technology come along before then and render driverless cars as a means of human transport irrelevant? Personally, I'm waiting for human drone delivery ;-)
