I was recently in Ecuador, and many major city streets don't really have lanes -- there is just a swarm of cars cooperating to fill the available space, communicating via friendly honks. Then there's the Mexican convention for passing on a 2-lane road, where the passer pulls into the center, and traffic in both directions pulls off onto the shoulders. Robot cars may be able to drive around Phoenix soon, but the rest of the world is much more complicated.
