Haven't more recent versions of k8s (say 1.9+), dropped some self-upgrading capabilities to smooth the pain of keeping klusters kurrent? I'm a few versions back on my clusters, but my understanding was that some decent work was being done to smooth the particular pain point of keeping pace with the project :)
