Yeah, I agree with you. There is no relationship, and definitely not a vendor relationship, between an open source developer and someone who downloads their work and uses it in exchange for nothing. A more sensible position seems like "lets get the bugs out fast rather than having one per architecture for the next 100 years" and making it open. But I can see that being unwise depending on how long they think it will take and how much of a hit to their reputation.
