  They're useful for "spoofing your IP address".

    That's not IP spoofing, which actually has a well-defined meaning (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address_spoofing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address_spoofing). Using a VPN for this purpose is merely proxying your traffic through a third party who has promised not to tell the server on the other end who or where you are.
