i'm optimistic AMD GPUs will be usable for general purpose computing soon. ROCm seems to be coming along nicely, and they have various deep learning frameworks functioning to various degrees. in particular, I think there's buy-in from the framework maintainers, they're not going to go out of their way to port but they also aren't averse to merging in code written by AMD engineers. i don't think people in research have any particular loyalty to NVIDIA, and everybody's macbook pro now has an AMD GPU, so there are also personal incentives to get this stuff working properly.
