  Perhaps they incompetently underspecified the battery for the long term needs of their processor, more than a year before the embarrassing insufficient current shutdown effects became painfully obvious, and instead of admitting to the costly blunder, they found a software bandaid they foolishly thought wouldn't bite them in the ass in yet another year.
