Lack of common ports on MacBook Pro requiring extra (paid) dongle hardware to make it similar in function to previous generation.
Apple led the way on lack of repairability and expandability on their devices. Sadly other manufacturers slowly followed suit.
You likely need to turn off iMessage if you migrate to a non-Apple phone to get SMS or text messages someone sends you from an iPhone.
Locking certain iOS functionality away from 3rd parties - preventing browsers such as Chrome from using said functionality that Safari enjoys.

- unethical_ban 9y agoRegulators shouldn't give a damn about 1 and 3. 2 and 4 are suspect.
- TeMPOraL 9y agoThey shouldn't, but they have to. Noone else will.
- icebraining 9y agoIf no one gives a damn, why have they?
- TeMPOraL 9y agoSorry: no one else with power to make it right gives a damn. Why they? Because that's their job - to help individuals coordinate at scale.
- unethical_ban 9y agoTo be clear: 1 and 3 are not a risk to consumers; they are merely an inconvenience.
- pc86 9y ago> You likely need to turn off iMessage if you migrate to a non-Apple phone to get SMS or text messages someone sends you from an iPhone. This is the most damning one. I recently (6 months ago?) switched to Android and I still have friends who cannot send me text messages. They're non-technical and unless I'm sitting in a room with them will not be able to walk them through the process. They have to do something, I can't do it on my end. So now I have a handful of friends with whom my only method of contact is FB messenger.
- nielsbot 9y agoYou can deregister your number online: https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage/ https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage/
- CoolGuySteve 9y agoEven if you do that, if the other person mesages you using your imessage contact instead of your phone contact, Apple will eat it instead of returning an undeliverable status. It's such a fucking scam.
- nielsbot 9y agoScam is a bit strong. Do you have other Apple products? You can go into messages settings and turn off your appleid addresses there. Or, last inconvenient) resort, call Apple?
- joosters 9y agoWhat? Are you seriously claiming there are regulations on what ports a laptop needs to have? Perhaps you should sue Apple for removing the floppy drive...
- slivanes 9y agoAnti-consumer doesn't have to mean against the law, it can also mean not consumer friendly too.
- BRAlNlAC 9y agoWhy is pushing the market towards global adoption of USB-C anti-consumer? USB-C is one of the most consumer friendly innovations in a decade; I'm very pleased that Apple is pushing hard on its adoption.
- lotu 9y agoYou are correct but, you should still respond the the underlying point. Should we (to make things more consumer friendly) regulate what ports are provided on computers and laptops? I argue no. Apple has always been a head of the curve on removing hardware from their devices. This is upsetting if you use that device but it also frees up resources that can be used for other things. This includes space/weight/power wise in the device and economically factories making floppy/cd-rom drives now make something more useful. The problem with regulations is they are often slow and arbitrary. That is not what we want in tech. I could imagine in 2010 that regulators (perhaps encouraged by a congress person that has a stake in CD-Rom factories), decide the iPad is a type of laptop and so much include a CD-ROM drive in it. Yes having every company make individual decisions is messy and inefficient but that doesn't mean regulations will end up producing better results.
- scarface74 9y agoSince Apple doesn't have anywhere near a monopoly, a consumer is free to choose between the trade offs you get from buying an Apple device or any other phone.
- icebraining 9y agoI'll give you on the expandability, but how are devices not reparable? I never owned an Apple device, but the charging port of my brother's iPhone was crapping out a few months ago, and I replaced it myself for less than 10€ with just a small screwdriver (included). He has also broken his screen, which was replaced on the spot in a few minutes.
- saagarjha 9y ago> preventing browsers such as Chrome from using said functionality that Safari enjoys Uh, such as what? The Nitro JavaScript engine is available for all apps now.
- slivanes 9y agoHow about the Certificate Store? The ability to access the system root store in iOS is not a public API - it's hidden behind the implementation details of SecTrustEvaluate which only the Apple system apps can access. This affects the ability for other browsers (non-Safari) to use client certificates in a simple manner.
