Uber boss says driverless cars are at least a decade away
- Someone 9y ago”He said the high cost of sensors […] as well as the need to map cities with centimetre-precision, meant completely self-driving vehicles would take longer than many are predicting.” That’s were I think they (and others such as Google) are making a mistake. A car shouldn’t need a map to drive safely, let alone one as accurate as that. Any solution that needs this will run into trouble the second that map becomes inaccurate, say because of road works or possibly even doubly parked cars. Yes, you can connect the cars in an enormous network so that the first to meet such a thing will update the map and inform others, but if cars can detect this and update that map, why does it have to be stored? If not, how often will humans have to interfere? Will those humans be able to, if they are the first to encounter such a situation maybe once a year?
