Exactly. Von Neumann architecture, null string termination in C and lack of encryption in TCP/IP are all arguably the things we got spectacularly right. All these three are efficiency + simplicity vs features + complexity trade offs. Imagine how much extra energy and latency and points of failure would be introduced into the system if almost every network device was required to encrypt/decrypt every packet. Naughty things like error correction and oh a zillion tricks our everyday game programmer is using would be impossible.
