It’s really simple math. The Republicans have 50 of the 99 votes in the Senate (McCain is currently out due to illness). They need 60 votes to pass a CR (or for none of the Dems to filibuster).
(50 < 60) => no CR without Democratic support. The Democrats could support the CR but have chosen not to. Therefore the Democrats have at least some culpability.
- cryptoz 9y agoForcing the situation where this happens is the Republican's fault. Your "simple math" simply excludes how the situation arose in the first place. Placing blame on the Democrats for this situation makes no sense; if the Republicans had been remotely skilled at governing for the last year then there would be no stupid threat of a midnight shutdown. The democrats are not to blame for this mess. The Republicans are. Also, the President already agreed with the Democrats plan. The problem is clear: the republicans cannot agree on anything inside their own party, the President is incapable of holding simple conversations or making reasoned arguments about policy, etc. This is the Republicans fault 100% and there is no way around it. A functioning government would never let this situation occur due to the destabilizing nature it has. The only solution is for Republicans to become reasonable human beings.

- sundaeofshock 9y agoThe GOP could end the filibuster and pass the CR with a simple majority, much like they did for SC justices, and the Dems did for federal judges.
- Armisael16 9y agoTrue. I wasn’t considering the nuclear option. I suppose that may be poor practice these days.
