Sales tax seems like it's just obsolete (and it's regressive, to boot). They should just make up any shortfall via property tax or income tax, rather than clinging to this thing they can no longer control.
- icantdrive55 9y agoI'm o.k. with a resonable sales tax. Growing up I felt 7% was reasonable. Now at 9.5% it's too high for myself. I would rather see fees/fines tied to income. Be it a traffic ticket, bail, or even procuring a Building Permit; a rich man would pay more. A poor man get a $500 traffic ticket. It affects him, and his family greatly. It might be the last straw? A rich man gets the same ticket, and casually mentions it over dinner. I won't even get started on bail. I've seen it financially ruin poor families-- just recently. I heard Sweden takes income into account when issuing fees/fines/etc. I feel we have the data to implement a system, and it might alleviate the---what's the word--resentment, rage the poor/middle class are developing towards the Wealthy in America?

- s4vi0r 9y agoBecause most people don't see taxation as theft, and don't mind paying it in exchange for certain goods/services?
- ericd 9y agoThey're not stealing from you, it's what's been decided by our elected representatives. You're free to try to elect people who agree that taxation is theft (you won't be the only one). Or you can always move to a state that already agreed with you and tries to minimize your tax burden.
