Handbrake is a pretty solid and easy to use GUI wrapper of ffmpeg.

  It handles a few (of the most common) use cases but it is not a generic interface for all of ffmpeg's functionality. And strictly speaking, it is built on top of Libav, although they are considering switching over after 1.2
