I don't know about the internals, but my guess is one of the following: 1) there's something about the lambda platform that just doesn't lend itself well to customer provided containers. a lot of people would AT LEAST have issues keeping image size reasonable. 2) they plan to add this. AWS is already investing in serverless container services, take a look at Fargate.
