Selling magic money boxes isn't in and of itself indicative of a scam. Bitmain sells tons of magic money boxes. They do so because they can manufacture them much faster than they can build facilities to host hundreds of megawatts of hardware (their last 150MW farm has been more than a year in the making.) Also, selling hardware is a way to diversify risk. Instead of mining and hoping Bitcoin doesn't crash tomorrow, the manufacturer can make money by selling the hardware today. PS: I'm not defending Kodak. Just commenting on your argument.
