There are any number of technologies that I've seen described as "simple" that I'm inexperienced in...and they look overly complex to me. When I learn to use them, they don't. I've used make for a long time. I've never considered it difficult to learn or use. It has a limited number of things that it does for you, and leaves the rest to you. I like that paradigm a lot more than systems that seem to operate magically.
