Umair Haque proposed an option in his HBR essay “Betterness: Economics for Humans.” He uses the analogy that GDP is like the RPM gauge on a car, hard to use without the context of a speedometer. He proposes new measures to supplement GDP and help indicate if real wealth is being created.
