I wonder if numbers like this are really a reliable indicator of what's going on. The world is big enough that you can be "niche" and still appeal to millions. I would also assume that fans of niche groups are more fanatical and supportive than fans of mainstream groups with broad appeal, which could equate to a much higher sales:fan ratio. Just speculating, though.
