This was commonplace (along with self-checkout terminals) in Switzerland few years ago. A friend of ours used it and it was in fact very convenient and worked really well. The only caveat is the "spot checks", whereby they would flag some purchases for validation and have a shop employee rescan N random items from the bags. It's still faster than the regular checkout, but messes us the bag packing.
