The backup plan is everyone else's primary plan. It can only help you - if you don't do anything stupid. (For example, don't take on any personal debt, and avoid non-competes / restrictive covenants.) Starting your own venture is a showcase for creativity, skill, wit and hard work; all things that will help you in a future career. The one problem I've had is that some jobs are literally beneath you once you've started a company - people can be afraid to hire you. But that's not really an obstacle as much as a platform.
