One possible, very sad long-term effect could be that the Sciences (results, theories) will be deemed less relevant, less trustworth, less worthy of attention. Eg. I started a Phd in Physics, but I never finished it, I got disillusioned with Academia and some specifics in today's Physics research (like String Theory, Inflation). 5 years later, people are still beating on those drums, and whenever I read about some crazy new model, I think two thoughts: (i) nonsense (ii) I'm so happy I'm not spending my time on this.
- fiatjaf 9y agoIt would be a very good outcome if society stopped believing anything that comes out of the mouth of a "scientist". It's just sophistry all the way down.
- zeth__ 9y agoThe problem in physics is that you hear about the highest high fliers of the discipline and assume most people will be something like them, if less inspired/gifted. Then you get there and find out most people are shitty, territorial and wages put you in the same income bracket as fast food workers.
- tensor 9y agoThe scary part is that if science is deemed not worthy of attention, then we enter a new dark age were no progress is made and no new understanding is gained. That's truly frightening.
