In my opinion, Java is not an enlightening language. In other words, learning Java will not make you a better programmer in other languages. It is only good for getting jobs.
If you do decide to learn it, make sure to use recent educational materials for Java 8+, so you learn how to use advanced features like lambda functions and unsigned integer types.
- _Tev 9y ago> It is only good for getting jobs. Beginner will either want a job or write some simple apps. "enlightening" languages are worthless for them.
- xfer 9y agoWhat? You do realize that lots of schools start entry level programming with "enlightening" languages(scheme, haskell etc)? You can write simple programs very easily with enlightening languages.
- tonyedgecombe 9y agoBut you won't see many jobs requiring scheme or haskell.
- _Tev 9y agoYes, and students from those schools are super confused when they want to write anything for real use. Schools teach a lot of things in a wrong way.
- blt 9y agoBeginner should use swift, kotlin, go, scheme, python to write those apps.
