ID games have always been technically astounding, but let down by art direction and inconsistent gameplay. From everything I have seen of Rage so far, it looks like they've been working on these shortcomings - I'm quite excited about playing it.

I'm excited to see it up close, but I think the controlls will ultimately leave me unfulfilled. :/

I found the game play of, say, Quake 3 quite consistent, if a bit simple minded.
