Last I’d heard (it’s been a while) there was significant interest in running z/OS and the like on emulators, usually on Intel. I’d be interested to know how much of that goes on these days. Seems sensible (to ignorant me, at least) that mainframe hardware would disappear in the handful-of-decades timeframe but I can imagine the software living on indefinitely.
