The one advantage of the 80s is you could open the windows (though there was no ac) and you could ride in the vestible between cars. Still having some risk adversion, I would generally get on/off from inside a car but had no problem reading my WSJ one handed while holding the handle. (Always ride your back to the direction of motion so braking pushes you against the door!) I do miss some of the better exterior graffiti of the late 70s/early 80s
