Given the right environment (which might include coaches or teachers) it should be possible to pick up knowledge about stress analysis, kinematics, heat transfer, dynamic analysis on your own. Calculus is a slightly different matter because it's indeed more foundational than the other areas you mentioned. Still, I think calculus can be learned without a formal education programme, too. After all, most of it has pretty obvious areas of application.
