Given the state of the front page/s of HN now, and lately, I expected the answer to be coin-hive or some other crypto-currency related thing.
Instead the answer is simply the rather more mundane "advertising".
- user5994461 9y agoDon't forget affiliations and subscriptions. At the height of their time, the likes of rapidshare/megavideo used to pay a lot.
- LV-426 9y agoI've heard that some forums which are dedicated to linking to copyright violations are owned by the file hosting site they use for the files.
