They did it for me (Slovenia, UK) and I've never bought AppleCare in my life. In my case they even once made an exception to cover my defect when I was two weeks late after deadline to report it.
Edit: I think I misunderstood your comment. Yes, good service like this would make me more likely to buy AppleCare to extend it (even though I haven't yet).
