I've been an iPhone user since launch, but this really is user-hostile behavior. I understand why they did it, and it's not bad as a field-patch to a hardware bug, but doing it silently is pretty skeevy. They should have mentioned this in the original battery recall, and displayed a warning on the battery screen in Settings, at the least.
