The Unix philosophy GUI thing has been done in a few directions. Plan9 did "absolutely everything is a data stream". Connect anything to anything in a bitmapped desktop. BeOS/haiku did "everything is an icon". Applications are not monoliths. Rather, they are organic on top of the GUI and filesystem. Tiling windows managers steer towards a usage of multiplexing terminals (and needing little else).
