My rules for riding a motorcycle:
1. Everyone is trying to kill you.
2. Anyone who isn't actively trying to kill you cannot see you.
3. The day you forgo a piece of gear is the day you need it.
So far a year of lane splitting in San Francisco and I'm collision-free.
