  You're joking, but that was the first application I thought of. It would be really interesting to create a low-throughput fallback network for neighborhoods using something like this. Though I suppose RF or optical are still quite a bit more practical.

    Or copper. You'll never justify your choice of "wet string" as medium of choice when things go south.
