- GhostVII 9y agoLots of countries (Canada, for one) have tuition that isn't free, but is reasonable priced, and gives subsidies to lower income individuals. Might be a better option than fully free tuition.
- icebraining 9y agoIsn't that how community colleges work in the US?
- vixen99 9y agoAs explained in this example: https://www.economist.com/news/britain/21670045-scrapping-tuition-fees-has-helped-rich-students-expense-poor-ones-costly-promise https://www.economist.com/news/britain/21670045-scrapping-tu.... 'Scrapping tuition fees has helped rich students at the expense of poor ones'
- meebs 9y agoReasonably priced only because your idea of value is distorted by American education fees. European education is as rigorous (if not more) and significantly cheaper than the 8.5k/semester I pay.
- mijamo 9y agoWhy would not free be better than free? In Sweden students are even paid.
- pesfandiar 9y agoBecause students then value their education and also try to get into majors that bring more value to the society. Granted, the latter assumes that value to the society correlates with future earnings, which may not always be the case.
- GhostVII 9y agoI think that going to school should still be seen as an investment, just a more reasonable one. If getting a degree won't help you get a job, I don't think the government should be fully paying for it - you should have to make financial sacrifices too. I guess mostly I just don't want to be the one paying (through taxes) for useless degrees that don't help the economy/employment, maybe that makes me selfish but it's my opinion.
- kayoone 9y agoI guess americans have the same stance against social healthcare: "Why should I pay for the sickness of other people ?" I think it is indeed selfish, but the US culture has been nurtured like this since it's inception.
