I've heard this advice a lot. Have you ever followed this in real life? How did it work out for you? I worry that cops have the potential to make my life very unpleasant if I annoy them.
- scarecrowbob 9y agoYeah, like, it's as easy as not responding with an answer when they ask you if you know how fast you were going. It's not that hard and if you're polite and you're white you're probably going to be okay.
- gumby 9y ago"I'm just asking to see if you tell the truth. If you don't answer I know you're guilty". And end up arrested.
- Simon_says 9y agoCops don't decide guilt or innocence. That doesn't make any sense.
- gumby 9y agoEver been arrested? It's no fun, and there's understandably a presumption by pretty much all concerned that the cop is telling the truth and the accused perp is not. What you say is indeed how the law is written, sure, but the truth on the ground is different.
- csomar 9y agoWho is annoying who? You are not required to answer any question. You might as well be non-polite too (I'm not suggesting it).
- Simon_says 9y agoWell, in my philosophy, the guy with the gun and the legal authority to arrest is the one who gets to decide who's annoying, unfortunately.
- csomar 9y agoThey can't arrest you without probable cause. Especially if you are inside your house.
- TaylorAlexander 9y agoThey absolutely can arrest you without probable cause. It’s illegal but that is to be decided later - and your case may never be decided if they find some excuse after the fact to legitimize an illegitimate arrest. This is made easy by the protectionism that happens amongst the police.
- convolvatron 9y agocharging someone with resisting arrest and nothing else is a pretty popular option
- jfnixon 9y agoCooperate fully, don't talk, and sue everyone involved--especially the local government--afterward. No one cares until it costs money.
- dmitrygr 9y agoYes. All the time. They get annoyed. Sometimes they shout or make empty threats. Eventually they tuck their tails between their legs and run off, realizing that I have no interesting in giving them any ammo against me.
- joshmn 9y agoI couldn't have answered the question any better myself. When I was still a teenager, they threatened to ring the door bell and wake up my parents. Like, what?
