You can hide the annoying/superfluous parts of the GUI pretty well with userchrome.css settings. The worst part now is the "no extensions on special pages" and "no extension may open an about:* page".

In the light of recent advancements on Firefox I feel optimistic these issues get addressed within the next 12 months.
