I recently attended a talk by one of the Qt developers, and he briefly mentioned that 'cute' is not an intentional cute name, instead it just comes from the way the letters in 'Qt' are said in norwegian language. As simple as that. Him not being norwegian, I cannot know if that is correct or just something that is said in their office in Oslo...
