Well, we have a national ID here in my country that significantly reduces the bizarreness that is the U.S. system of not being able to verify who actually owes a debt.... (not that we don't have annoying debt collectors, but not in this scale and with those errors). In my opinion, a national ID's benefits SIGNIFICANTLY outweigh their theoretical downsides (I mean, the NSA already exists). It makes my life easier (but I still end up developing systems for the U.S. and I have to assume they don't have IDs :P )
