The EU wasn't even a governing entity when this tax deal was created. That isn't an easy point to defend.

  > That isn't an easy point to defend. Let me try: Ireland joined the EU in 1973. Apple was founded in 1976. This "deal" was reached in 1991, and amended & renewed in 2007. The taxes in question stem from profits in the years 2003 to 2014.

    Ireland joined the EC in 1973, the EU did not exist until the Maastricht Treaty was signed in 1992.

      The clause in question - unfair state aids - were already a part of the Rome Treaties, much earlier.
