The flipside of that is - I'm an adult, I want to talk to people who can handle critiques and debate without getting unduly upset. Disagreement != trolling.

- teilo 9y agoThat's not a flipside. That's a restatement of my criticism of these subreddits. There is a difference between constructive criticism and/or correction (which I am all for), and belittling, demeaning, insulting, and cursing at people.
- HumanDrivenDev 9y agoThere is a difference between constructive criticism and/or correction (which I am all for), and belittling, demeaning, insulting, and cursing at people. IME a lot of thin skinned people on the internet always view the former as the latter. It's equally as tiresome.
- kelnos 9y agoIME a lot of people use "people need to be less thin skinned" as a weak rationalization for dickish behavior that would get them fired from their job and/or ostracized from their real-life social circle. But since it's online and no one knows who you really are, it's somehow "acceptable". No, it isn't, and communities that encourage or allow that type of behavior are incredibly toxic.
- HumanDrivenDev 9y agoI'd say wounded, passive aggressive responses like this are far more damaging to a community than bluntness or the occasional swear word. They're much more insidious and subtle. No one will ever really ban you for talking like that, but it changes the whole tone of a place much more than the occasional heated discussion.
- sanderjd 9y agoYour parent's response wasn't passive aggressive at all, it was a direct statement of their view of the problem with people who think the problem is other people being "thin skinned".
- HumanDrivenDev 9y agoReally not sure how you don't see it. Mimicking my sentence structure, implying that people who talk like me are ostracised by society (!?), and using phrases like "incredibly toxic". I could almost hear the tone of voice reading that sentence.
- sanderjd 9y agoOk, I see how the sentence structure mirroring could be read as passive aggressive, but the rest of that is just flatly stated disagreement; there's nothing "passive" about it.
- kelnos 9y agoI assure you that you have no idea what tone of voice I was using. There was absolutely nothing passive-aggressive about my response to you. I was merely pointing out how you're flat-out wrong, and I am super tired of people who somehow believe that feelings, emotions, and empathy don't matter in communication. There are some people (such as yourself) who seem to believe they don't, but in the end that just ends up being short-sighted, non-inclusive thinking that drastically reduces the number of people who want to associate/work/do business with you. If that's ok with you, then by all means, continue to engage in boorish behavior, and I'm sure in the end you'll reap what you sow. So... is that "blunt" enough for you?
- rurban 9y agoSo why is everytime I point out the glaring problems of rust, which are mentioned in their docs and contradict their marketing hypes are always downvoted into oblivion? Nobody ever dated to check out the docs and issues. I mean claiming memory safety with an unsafe keyword and refounting, and deadlocking concurrency with manually required mutexes called "fearless concurrency" whilst having no idea about actual concepts solving those problems. Pure fanboyism. Better than C yes, but not better and much slower and unsafer than ATS or Pony.
