I remember coming to US, Chicago specifically, less then 15 yrs ago, coming to suburbs and discovering weird silence and lack of people. It freaked me out so much that I am still in the city /w my wife and 3 kids. Suburbs are weird and can make you crazy. I don't want to comment on other parts of the post, as I just don't share same concerns.
