> Last year, 12 percent of Stanford MBA graduates were hired by private equity firms, with a median starting salary of $177,500, the article said. Venture capital companies hired 7 percent of them, and paid a median salary $167,500 to the beginners.
Wow.. I chose the wrong career track.
- sndean 9y ago>> median salary $167,500 to the beginners It's not all that high, since calling them beginners isn't exactly true [0]. It looks like a decent-sized chunk of the students have years of work experience in finance/consulting/tech and some already have advanced degrees. They weren't going to be paid poorly to begin with. - autokad 9y agoyeah, i believe you need 2 good years of experience to get into a top mba program
- gech 9y agoAnd they got that work experience originally due to internships... which they only got due to elite networking or pedigree
- kelukelugames 9y agoHave your read the book Pedigree? It's about how people get these type of jobs written by a Kellog Professor. A lot of gatekeeping. Our society is not merit based. link to book: http://amzn.to/2AqPTfw http://amzn.to/2AqPTfw
- toephu2 9y agoyou forgot how much a Stanford MBA puts you in debt..
- chronic824 9y agoLess than $160k, that's for sure. Say whatever you have to in order to make yourself feel better.
- mlevental 9y agothere was someone that had responded to you saying something mocking like "much less than 160k but say whatever makes you feel better" that deleted their comment between when i saw it and when i logged in so i'm replying to you so that that person burns a little inside: there's nothing more priceless than someone being not just wrong but 180 degrees wrong: http://fortune.com/2012/12/07/stanford-mba-price-tag-hits-185k-highest-in-the-world/ http://fortune.com/2012/12/07/stanford-mba-price-tag-hits-18...

- mlevental 9y agothanks!
- akhilcacharya 9y agoIn fairness that’s basically what FB/Google pays new grad SWEs with competing offers.
- rifung 9y agoNot if you only consider salary though right? I assume MBAs also get bonuses and the such?
- akhilcacharya 9y agoThat's fair but obviously they also have to deal with MBA school tuition. I'm surprised that it's not as significant of a difference as I thought initially.
- richardknop 9y agoNot base salary. MBAs get huge bonuses and other incentives. So comparing just base salaries FB/Google pays little.
- kelukelugames 9y agoMy friend went to GSB and works in PE. I hung out with his co workers once and they talk about things I can never afford and I'm in the 1%!
- pault 9y agoYou're making a comparison to the top 10% of the graduating class of an ivy league college; if you did the same analysis on Stanford MSCs in CS you would probably get a similar breakdown. That doesn't mean everybody going into software engineering makes $200,000/year (I'm making the assumption that the private equity firms are hiring the top performers in this case).
