This is the biggest failing of modern debate. It seems like we've thrown compassion and putting ourselves in other people's shoes and now just say "your view is stupid, change it". Imagine someone presenting that to you? Is your immediate thought "hm, you're right! convincing point!" or "Go fuck yourself"?
- nasredin 9y agoIt seems that reluctance to consider other views is closely related to the level of education, and place of upbringing. This IS not a failing in modern debate, but a much bigger issue. I have seen less educated people show zero empathy for the opposing side many more times than the reverse. Also you cannot have debates with some people, e.g. right wing authoritarians. Some people are just born that way.

- ericd 9y agoRight, it's not about education as much as it is knowing people who don't share the same views as you. If everyone you know thinks the same way you do (which is as common among left wingers as right), then it's much easier to believe that people who don't share your views must be insane/less than human/your enemy.
