Remote work is extremely difficult to get. There are few remote positions available.

  ^^ So many companies are managed by people that seem to absolutely require you to be butt-in-seat or else they assume you will turn into an island or not get any work done, despite all evidence to the contrary. About a year ago I decided I was going to stop moving around the country chasing opportunities and move to a place I actually wanted to live, assuming I'd be able to get reasonable remote work. My salary fell from $180K to $60K because it was impossible to find suitable remote work after 6 months of looking and I got stuck at a local small-time outfit. Hell just take a look at the "Who's Hiring" post on the homepage, even in the tech space remote work is basically non-existent.
